Overview

Digital x-rays, also known as digital radiographs, are created to assist your dentist at a dental exam to allow a better view of your oral health or during times of dental trauma or emergencies to find out what is causing pain and discomfort. Digital X-rays allow our general and cosmetic dentists, Dr. Chris and Dr. Matt, to diagnose concerns that are not visible by the naked eye — the inside of your teeth, gums, and jaw. There are several oral health conditions that can be seen on digital images such as tooth decay, cavities, cysts, abscesses, tooth impactions, and bone loss. When these conditions are discovered early, they may require less invasive treatment options. During your dental examination at Miller & Miller Dentistry in Plano, TX, digital X-rays will help Dr. Chris and Dr. Matt  accurately diagnose and treat oral health conditions.

Best Candidates

In most cases, X-rays are a part of your dental exam. They can be administered as part of a preventive dental treatment plan or to determine what the cause could be if you are experiencing pain in your mouth. Though digital X-rays use less radiation than film X-rays, Miller & Miller Dentistry likes to minimize patient exposure. While they are usually safe for any patient, women who are breastfeeding or may be pregnant should let our staff know at the beginning of the appointment for extra precautions to be followed for your safety.

What to Expect

When you visit our Plano, TX office, we will most likely escort you to a treatment room first, , most treatment rooms are equipped to allow you to get your x-ray images right there. If other x-rays are needed, we will then walk you over to the x-ray machine for your imaging. Most patients will have a series of X-rays taken, which include the entire mouth and jaw (all areas or a 360º view) or a small area of a single tooth. All you have to do is to follow instructions and sit relatively still. After the digital X-rays are complete, they will be uploaded to your electronic medical record and can be viewed by you and Dr. Miller in private consultation. He will assess your needs for treatment if there are any areas of concern and go over your options.

Follow-Up

A series of digital X-rays will generally be performed once a year at your dental exam. For some visits, a series of your whole mouth may be performed to get a more comprehensive view of the teeth, gums, and jaw. Your digital images will be stored with your electronic dental record at Miller & Miller Dentistry so that your dentist, Dr. Chris or Dr. Matt Miller, can view changes over time and chart any developing symptoms or teeth with decay.
