Overview
If scheduling an appointment at the dentist’s office causes you fear and anxiety, you are not alone. People of all ages have distinct fears about undergoing dental procedures. For this reason, Miller & Miller Dentistry offers sedation dentistry to enable you to feel safe and comforted throughout a dental treatment or procedure.
The most commonly performed sedation dentistry options are:
- Nitrous oxide sedation, often referred to as laughing gas, is a traditional type of sedation that offers mild-to-moderate sedation.
- Oral-conscious sedation employs prescription medication to allow patients to minimize anxiety before and during a dental procedure.
Either of our general and cosmetic dentists Dr. Chris or Dr. Matt will meet with you during a consultation to thoroughly explain the different sedation possibilities available at Miller & Miller Dentistry to find the best option for you.

Best Candidates
If you suffer from fear and anxiety at the thought of undergoing standard dental procedures, then you are likely an ideal candidate for oral sedation dentistry. Since there are effective sedation methods for a variety of situations, Dr. Chris Miller or Dr. Matt Miller will ask you a series of questions about your medical history and lifestyle to help determine which option is the safest for you.
What to Expect
The process for sedation dentistry will vary based on which technique you have chosen. With nitrous oxide sedation, the primary goal is to temporarily sedate you by placing a mask over your nose, which administers nitrous oxide gas to breathe in. Oral-conscious sedation is performed by prescribing the patient to take anti-anxiety medication about one hour before their appointment to help keep calm before and throughout the treatment. This particular method is not adjustable once taken.
Follow-Up
Prior to the beginning of any procedure utilizing sedation methods, you will discuss with your dentist what could be expected afterward. At times, you will need to have someone else drive you to and from your appointment as it may not be safe to drive. Following the procedure, it is strongly suggested that you rest and hydrate.
